Description

The Current Analysis Carrier Infrastructure module covers the significant companies, technologies, and strategies that are shaping the world of the carrier, Internet service provider, and network service provider in the public network environment. This module provides coverage in four market segments: Carrier Core Switch/Routing, Carrier Edge Switch/Routing, Carrier Ethernet, Carrier Ethernet Access and Aggregation Routers, and Mobile Backhaul for Radio Access Networks.

Core Switch/Routing focuses on switching and routing technologies used by Internet and network service providers at the core of the carrier network to provide backbone services. Technologies covered include IP routing systems (referred to as Terabit or scalable routers) as well as traditional and next generation ATM and MPLS-based systems.

Carrier Edge Switch/Routing focuses on switching and routing technologies used by Internet and network service providers at the edge of the carrier network to connect to enterprise customers. Technologies covered include IP routers targeted at the edge of the carrier network as well as both traditional and next generation systems supporting ATM and MPLS.

Carrier Ethernet covers next generation platforms that address the needs of carrier Ethernet service delivery and high density Ethernet aggregation. Carrier Ethernet routers provide Ethernet services with MPLS switching support, traffic engineering, rich QoS support, OA&M capabilities, are scalable and can support thousands of customers and services. Services include Ethernet virtual leased line (VLL), Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS), other Ethernet services such as high speed internet access, IP-VPN, and high density Ethernet aggregation. Support for triple play and emerging IPTV are key market drivers.

The Carrier Ethernet Access and Aggregation Router market segment is comprised of next generation platforms that have been specifically designed to address the needs of carrier Ethernet service delivery at the access layers of the service provider’s network. These routers provide Ethernet services that support stringent traffic engineering, tiered or hierarchal QoS, and integrated OA&M capabilities. They also provide scalable solutions ranging to address the needs of smaller Points of Presence (PoPs) to the very large high density PoPs. The platforms in this segment are available in cost and footprint optimized configurations that enable a service provider to right-size its locations to match current and projected traffic and service needs. Typical services required by service providers are Ethernet virtual leased line (VLL), Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS), other Ethernet services such as high speed Internet access, IP-VPN, and Ethernet aggregation.

The Mobile Backhaul for Radio Access Networks market consists of radio access network (RAN) access and aggregation infrastructure, which is used to support wireless wide area network services using licensed RF spectrums in the case of GSM/UMTS and CDMA2000 networks, license-exempt spectrum for metro-scale WiFi, and WiMAX for high-speed data and voice over IP (VoIP) services based on the 802.16 standard and alternative technologies. The mobile operator’s approach to establishing an effective RAN backhaul network strategy will depend largely upon the types of services the operator offers or plans to offer as well as current factors such as the multi-generational aspects of the base stations currently deployed at its cell sites, the availability of specific access (backhaul) transport infrastructures at its disposal, and the new equipment being considered that will enable it to offer new high value data and video-rich services.
